can not see the prompt

I've just installed basic Slackware 9.1 (no X)
on my toshiba Portege 660CDT first time in my life.
It's a 150MHz, 81MB RAM 1.2GB HDD laptop and has
Chips & Technology video chip F65554
w/64bit Data width, 2MB video RAM.
I have no problems except
I can not see the prompt,
its down the bottom 11 lines.

Help me please.
thank you.

Is there a dial or a setting you can twiddle on your monitor to adjust the offset?

Andrew, thank you for the quick reply.
Unfortunately it does not have a dial to
adjust screen size.

How can I check what video card is installed
or is there a possibility in Linux to
play w/video in basic installation?

When I open a new console session w/Alt+Fx
it starts from the very top (no linguine)
but as soon as the screen is filled w/text
the prompt goes 11 lines down the border of the
display.

I tried to install minimal X and KDE for three days
but every time a got an error "could not start KDE init".
For the limited disk space I had to play
w/ manual selection of package components.
So far no luck.
I also sent e-mail to Slackware Tech Support.
No answer.

To my mind its impossible to separate GNOME and
KDE at the installation stage. So the whole
distribution must be installed and only then one
can remove idle components w/ trial and error approach.
I checked that I have the latest BIOS version on
this laptop.

I also installed Full Slackware 9.1 on Dell 300MHz PII desktop.
It works fine.

i think i had the same problem on an older laptop i had....you might want to check which resolution your computer is booting into (i know you can do it in the lilo.conf file in /etc/ if you use lilo) and make sure the framebuffer is one that fits yourscreen.

Switching to RedHat 7.2

I've checked lili.conf. It does not have Framebuffer statement.
===
I installed RedHat 7.2. No problem wiht the prompt any more.
Behaves exactly as it used to work in MSDOS/windows.

But,...
It did not ask me to configure network w/Xircom PCMCIA card.

when I start X it gives an error.
It says that it an not support 1024x...

I'm reinstalling RH one more time.
It seems RH is much more wiser in terms of
minimal configuration installation for a new user as me.
It checks for dependencies,
what Slackware misses completely.
What a shame.

RedHat is installed and

runs on my Toshiba Portege 660CDT.
P150MHz, 81MB RAM, 1.2GB HDD, C&T 65554 video.
X runs at 800x600 resolution, 16bit color depth.

continue working on:
Network,
sound,
etc.
But I can read info/man pages at lease.
Nedd to install:
acrobat reader ot its equvalenca and .chm reader
to read my Linux books.

PS when I touched Linux I got a feeling that
I am again in the maize of unknown...
same feeling when I started MS-DOS 2.0 on my 286.

Why do I need it if I already forgot it 8 years ago?
he-he..
