programs disappear after reboot knoppix 8.1

Hi everyone
I tried to install amule on my old laptop (toshiba centrino duo).
for the installation no problem at all, and the program work fine.
after shut down or reboot the program disappear, just gone.
I notice also I can 't bookmark any webpage in Chromium, to be precise I can do that but the bookmark disappear after shut down or reboot.
Any idea would be great.
Thank you in advance.

are you sure it is installed on your laptop, as this is live distro behavior.

Unless you can setup persistence (I don't know if you can with Knoppix but), then it's loaded into RAM. So as soon as you restart your machine, everything in RAM is wiped out.

The above applies to any Linux distribution (expect what I said about Knoppix, as I know you can setup persistence with other distributions).

Given the simplicity of the OP, I think a better explanation is in order. When you boot the Knoppix CD/DVD/USB drive, it does not install to the hard drive. It installs to ram memory. You can install it to the hard drive, but you must explicitly tell Knoppix to install to the hard drive.

As mentioned more than once before, everything you do in Knoppix will be wiped out when you shut it down. There are ways to enable persistence, so changes are not lost, but it's more difficult on Knoppix than with other live distros.

Smile Thank you all for answers

Reading all your answers, I m quite sure that knoppix is install into the laptop (I don t put any cd rom in to boot knoppix) but now I start to wonder, the fact I don t put the cd rom to boot knoppix is sufficient to say that knoppix is installed into the hdd?
I vaguely remember that I use cd knoppix to format this laptop (going in the bios, change boot order and so on) and after format the laptop at the first reboot knoppix was starting from cd and at that poin I clicked on an icon to install knoppix in hdd (3 options by memory, option1 install with overlay..., option2 install with size...overlay, option3 install with no overlay) I chose option3
That s pretty much all I did.
Next week with a bit more time I ll see if I can get out of this mud.
Ps I also notice after install amule that before reboot and lose everything if I move the program from the list appearing in the start button into another folder after the reboot in the folder I still find the applications (with different Icons (look like romboid shape with a gears in the middle))
Thank you again for your help

you should/might want to bump yourself up to a distro that is meant to be installed on the computer if that is what you're really wanting to do.

You've already know Linux enough to boot it, and operate it well enough, might as well continue your education.

I'm not sure what your end goal is but I do think it would be a good idea to read the Knoppix page at the link below on what Knoppix is designed for.

Thank you again

Hi everyone, reading the link about installation I realize that choosing option3 I didn't dedicated any space to store applications, so that must be the problem, I haven't tried yet so I will wait to confirm before put solve.
My goal at this stage is to load a very few programs on this platform (the laptop is very old and slow) and also because I m more familiar with the c compiler in Linux than a c compiler running on windows
I also can use applications like maxima and gnuplot.
Anyway thank you all again for your help.
