Odd problem with sound

I'm setting up a new thinkpad X61 with debian etch, and I have an odd problem with the sound, I can't hear any sound unless the console (in this case konsole) is makeing a sound, for example if you hold down the tab button in a konsole window, when that happens I hear sounds from other programs fine (I tested both VLC and KDE's system notifications). although I don't hear sounds from konsole itself

Any one got a clue whats happening and how to fix that?
