Question Odd Sound Problem

I installed Mandriva 10.1 on my Acer TM4500. The compjuter, recognizes the Intel sound card and has the "snd-intel8x0" mod loaded. I used, as root, alsaconf, alsamixer and alsactl store to set parameters, unmuting everything and raising the sound volume. When using KsCD the application sees the CD, and reports the Artist and song names but I get no sound. If I use amoraK or audacity to play .mp3 files I do get sound. Any ideas ?

So it's cd's that you can't hear. Have you tried other cd player programs, like XMMS (might require a plugin), Xine or Mplayer? Are you trying as root or a user? Have you checked KDE's sound settings regarding device levels? I think KDE uses it's own as opposed to alsaconf settings.

Talking Odd Sound Problem

Dracolich,
I hadn't really tried another player until now since I was focused on getting KsCD to work since it popped up as the default player. After your suggestion I opened the cd with kaffeine and am now enjoying some old Dave Brubeck. I also tried it with a DVD and all seems to be well.
I did bring up kmix and it had all the volumes up so I'm not sure about the problem being with the KDE sound settings.
At any rate, thanks for the assist. Now I'm off to work on the wireless........as soon as Brubeck finishes. :-)
