Is this a PCI modem, USB modem, or external serial modem?

What distribution are you using?

What is the output of lspci and lshw? The first command tells about PCI controllers and cards, the second tells about all the hardware in your system. You might have to install lshw as some distributions don't include it.

We will need the chipset or modem name with model to help accurately. Open Konsole and as root type lspci and it will give you the chipset info we need for the modem. If you want to guess Suse has a couple of soft modem drivers in their dvd repository. Open YaST and look for modem drivers, one listed as "smart link", another may be listed as "slmodem".
