Audio CDs skip when playing with Sound Juicer and Rhythm Box. The music starts, then stops while the drive starts spinning again, then plays after skipping about 1 second. The sequence keeps repeating. This occurs on a CD/RW and a DVD drive in the same system (Athlon 2000+ with 512 MB). The CD plays fine when running Win2K. I ran System Monitor while playing, and CPU and memory utilization were minimal. Copying the CD to hard disk works fine - the music plays OK. First had problem with Ubuntu 6.11. Just downloaded 7.4 and it has same symptoms.

It seems it might be a DMA problem.
As root, check with hdparm if you have DMA enabled for your optical drives (hdparm -d /dev/whatever)
If you don't have DMA enabled, you can do it wiht "hdparm -d1 /dev/whatever.

Thanks for the suggestion. I neglected to mention that I had already checked for DMA mode. Are there any buffer size or threshold parameters that can be set for the optical drives?
