Question Is startupnotify still necessary in OpenBox?

When I was using Gentoo I remember having to specifically build in support for startupnotify. Now that I'm using Arch, I notice that a lot of desktop packages have the startup-notification package as a dependency. Furthermore, I still see the <startupnotify> tag listed for any advanced application in my openbox/menu.xml

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that
Code:
<startupnotify>
  <enabled>true</enabled>
</startupnotify>
was no longer necessary for applications that have startup notification built-in. Honestly, I can't tell a difference in OpenBox whether I do or don't throw the above code in menu.xml. Am I missing something here? Or does it really not matter?
