Installing Debian 4.0 + gnome into a ASUS A6VA laptop

Hi,

First i would like to tell that im quite new into the scene so, some questions will be quite easy (i believe) to reply

As topic subject says i own a ASUS laptop (ATI Graphics ) and im trying to install debian 4.0 into this but im getting some annoying problems (lots of fun!). I managed to install the OS without much troubles but now, and i can understand why, when it boots the screen turns black and it doesnt boot to gnome.

I've also tryed to find out the problem booting to the terminal console but since my junior experience with this i wonder if someone can help.

Thanks in advance,
JPR

You are able to get into a terminal console. That is good.

Issue the command 'dmesg' (wighout quotes). Look for error messages that may give a clue to the problem.

Also, su to root (enter the command 'su', then give the root user password), and give the command 'cat /var/log/messages | tail -n 200'. (all wighout quotes). Look for error messages.
