How to use 2 GPU's for one desktop?

Hi,

I have two GPU's in my system a NVidia a GTX1060 driving 3 monitors and a GTX750Ti driving another 3, using the os from Redmond which must not be named this works just fine 6 monitors working together as one huge desktop.

But using linux mint, the most I can do is to get the 3 additional screens to display a wallpaper and I can go with my mouse there but that is all, I can not start a application on them or move a running application there.

The Nvidia configuration tool allowed me to assign the 3 other monitors to a new x Screen 1, but it does not allow me to assign them to screen 0 on which the desktop seams to be.

So my question how can I get X screen 0 to be comprised of all 6 monitors?
Or at least how can I get a "start menu" and task manager bar onto the other 3 screens?

Cheers
Trax

Hi & Welcome to LQ.

I'm not the best with manipulating 2 GPU. It may not even be possible.... but I did find some links that look like a start.

After reading some of these threads it looks like you will have to tweak or otherwise change and edit the Xorg configuration file.

Two Graphics Cards Multiple Monitors Possible.

If you are getting error messages try looking up the errors.

Sorry I'm not that good with more than one GPU.
Good luck-

I suggest you setup xorg.xonf with device and monitor (or are these called screen) sections

I would run the nivida-settings tool in the x session. than i would hit the detect monitor button. you may be lucky when the binary blob driver tool finish the tasks for you. there is a way to save an example xorg.conf file there too.

From the x server point of view: I think the only way is to have for each screen a separate x-server running, like i3wm afaik does it in the background for every physical screen.

basically you need to find a way to autostart a panel for each screen for your desktop environment. panel is the software piece, e.g https://wiki.lxde.org/en/LXPanel
