How to install software on Fedora Core

Hey Everybody,
I am a new Linux user and i am just not understanding something. I have two files, a darkice and an alsa tools tarball, but i dont understand how to install a program on a WindowsX system.
I have installed fedora 5 and im using the KDE Desktop. Will someone point me too or help me understand how to install files, please. its probably something simple but it's blowing my mind.

Chris

You don't use tarballs until you get a little bit of experience. For Fedora, study on "yum"

I've changed your thread title, so that it reflects the contents to your post. As rickh said, try using yum to install software before compiling from source. There is a general guide for installing software on Linux, which is available here.
