Installing software Fedora Core 4

I've downloaded several programs to try to install but I keep getting messages like "could not generate makefile" or :qmake: command not found". I just installed the default setup when installing Fedora core 4 and was wondering what additional packages I need to install in order to to compile other downloaded software. By the way, these are not packages but rather files ending in .tar.gz I have been able to install packages.

What you mean by default install? Cause you need some developer stuff to compile most things out there. Now, if you did a full install, you have everything you need. Maybe you just need to take a closer look at installation fiiles such as README's or INSTALL's.

I chose the "personal desktop option" but this didn't seem to have the files I needed.
