Gnome login prompt

I am running RHEL 6.2 in virtual box on a HP z600 workstation ruuning windows 7. I loaded Gnome and GDM using yum. I edited the /etc/gdm/custom.conf

[security]
DisallowTCP=false
AllowRemote=true

[xdmcp]
Enable=true

When I start the GUI (startX) the screen pops up with a white box in the center with an red - and a bunch of empty blocks. no login prompt. Is there anything else I need to do ?

thanks
TonyD
