I have the same problem in OpenOffice with DejaVU Condensed, so I think this may be an old bug. I've even seen it mentioned in conjunction with other software, like InDesign.
If you click on Format - Character - Font, you may be able to select "condensed" as you would "bold", although that doesn't work for me. The only other solutions are
1. Use something else. Sans fonts are much of a muchness, and often difficult to distinguish. Some are wide like URW Gothic, some narrow like Ariel. Admittedly, your font is very narrow.
2. Load the font into FontForge and rename it to something different.
