Using Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS, nVidia GForce GT 430 gpu...
Typing ctrl + alt + Fn from normal gui desktop used to bring up a cli login screen. Now, it's just a black screen, with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Ctrl + alt + F7 returns to gui desktop, as usual.
Can't figure out what's wrong... Scouring the net suggests maybe something to do with the gpu card, but info is too specific to other systems for me to use.
Are you using "Fn" as shorthand for F<number> (e.g. F1, F2, F3) or are you literally hitting the "Fn" (function) key? If the latter that may be your problem.

What MensaWater said. It sounds like the shortcut you're hitting is taking you to the OS's tty.
