Microsoft are now releasing their code to specific organizations. How long do you reckon it will take for more portability to linux? EG: We'll be able to write to NTFS without any difficulties... We'll be able to run more games coz we'll be able to get more API Calls, etc etc...

well, they're doing it coz billy the gate declared the age of the PC over for microshit and is now going into developing for tiny devices.

once they corner that market, we'll be posting on message boards from those tiny devices on how to play catch up to them with linux or some other new commie-sounding thing

We're living a time in which IMAGE is so important... I think the new "openess" of Billy is only to give their big customers the impression "after all, M$ is open too" ... BUT in practice who goes to modify Windoze ??? or even audit that code ???? and all under a non-disclosure agreement so that openess... means nothing to us.

I've hard that Bill Gate will give away his windows to the open-source communities and he will retire with his wife and children somewhere in Japan on top of an old volcano.

It is only being shown to governments. They are actually hoping that if they can see the code they will feel better about the errors in it thus making them to be able to make a balanced choice i.e. Choose windows (yuch)

It's all look but no touch, and it's not all of the code just a little bit at a time through a web browser, just more marketing from MS.

But wouldn't this still mean that Linux developers will be able to port programs, games, filesystems a lot easier and faster with the code...

Even though its only released to specific organizations/governments, it will still get leaked out...as everythign always does.

How do you leak code when you have to be an approved entity, then apply to MS and then be approved to view the code (one page at a time) through a secure web server (probably IIS.......hahahaha) in a secure web browser (they better make mozilla the default) and then you'll have to copy and paste the text and reconstruct it and then you have to trust that MS are showing you the real code to start with, in the order that it was in when it was created..........woops said bill, we didn't mean to scramble the page order but office crashed when we were doing the html save and no one here knows how to fix it.......

Definitely M$ is not going to Open Source... all that intricacies and undocumented features and calls makes its products... terribly difficult to be replaced by others. Look how many years has been Wine around.

I don't believe will be "leaks" of relevant information... it's only marketing (I agree with Aussie).

they have been sort of "open" for a while. when i went to my imperial college london (very good, i.e. best uk uni for technology and i got in ) interview they told me how they have access to a database of (all? can it be?) microsofts source code for student use. when i get there (six months), i will be sure to leak some to linux users, *cough* i mean... no... i wont do that *cough*.

The funny thing is that M$ has been giving (and by giving, I mean selling) its code for several years. I attended a class back in 1997 where the instructor owned a large programming company and he had bought parts of the source code for Windows NT 4.0. They are now just using the buzzword "open" to make it look good.

Although, lets not forget it's not entirely open - they are releasing some selected parts of the code to some, selected companies. These companies have to then sign an NDA.

Not very open.
