Hey everyone. Here's the story: I'm doing a TAFE (college) assignment at the moment of which I've chosen to write a report on the age-old debate of Windows or Linux, keeping it as unbiased as possible.
One of the tasks is to conduct a survey, so I've got a couple of questions to ask anyone who's interested?
First of all, please state your gender (M/F) and age group (13-18, 19-41, 41+), then here are the questions:
Which OS would you rather use (Windows, Win Server, Linux) if you:
1. were a web host was after an OS for servers?
2. were a web site developer?
3. were a gamer?
4. were a professional photographer?
5. didn't use your computer much, just to listen to music and use the internet, and ran older hardware?
1) Linux with Apache2 without a doubt
2) Already do that in Linux
3) Unfortunately most of the big name games will only run in Windows or in something like Cedega/Wine in Linux.
4) There are many apps for this in Linux, GIMP, Krita, Inkscape, Blender, Cinerella, Cinepaint, hugin, and many others that do quite a lot more than Photoshop.Just ask Hollywood.
5) DUh Linux, of course you could do like a lot of people with odler hardware and still be running windows98 with all of its security holes.
Linux isn't the old text only OS any more it does more than windows could dream of doing, faster and cheaper. Nor is it only for computer geeks, very few of the people that post in the forum could be considered computer/tech geeks.
1. Linux + Apache2 + MySQL + PHP (LAMP Stack)
2. Linux, absolutely
3. Windows, sadly. Though I play plenty of games on Linux
4. Linux... plenty of photo editing tools, but more important is the photo management tools
5. Linux - no need to worry about viruses or spyware, does what one needs
M 41+
1. LAMP
2. Linux
3. Wouldn't know. Don't play games.
4. Linux. I have a small photo enterprise on the side and see no reason to pay for an inferior product
5. See above.
1. LAMP
2. Linux
3. Would love to play all my games on Linux. Still need to run Windoze for them and the gaming hardware.
4. Linux
5. All my older boxes move down the food chain into full time Linux. Today's XP games machine, tomorrows Linux gateway/print server/network storage device/wireless music player.
Why Linux versus Windows. I would add options for BSD and MAC as well. I think it was OpenBSD where there was only one security flaw detected in 8 years.
And a question that I'm missing is the use in office environment.
And another suggestion: I think you will get very biased answers here. Maybe you should find a more general forum that is not dedicated to Linux (or windows).
M, 41+
1) Linux (or BSD)
2) Linux (or BSD)
3) Linux; I don't game much, except for occasional encounters with minesweeper and the likes.
4) Don't know; currently use windows for it
5) Linux

First of all, I was considering putting in Mac, Solaris and the rest of the crew, but I just wanted to keep things nice and simple.
Also, I will be putting the survey on other forums and some more general ones, but I picked this one because people actually know something about Linux -- different to most other of the world's population. But yeah, on a forum like this you're right -- there are just going to be biased answers! lol but thank you for your concern
The answer is that I would rather to use Linux for all of them. It's probably the case that professional photographers don't really care about the OS beyond it's ability to run their app[s] of choice.
If you want the opinions of photographers, web designers, gamers etc, you'd be better off asking them what they think - if you ask a Linux enthusiast site what we think other people would rather use... I think it's not a good method to get good data.

exactly ...
infact developers , artists , writers and the likes dont visit forums ... at least not as oftently as we thought ...
as for the survey ... i would like to say all of them in linux but then ... why not including solaris x86 and bsd ... sometimes its hard to decide which one to boot into since i dont use them in ways which are too "differently" ...
