I currently have Windows ME on 2 new computers in the office. 50% of our programs are dos based. I'm having more trouble than ME is worth. How can I downgrade to Windows 98 (SE)? Please help. Apparently in our attempt to become technology current, the rest of the world has not yet caught up. We also have a dsl line and are networked (peer to peer) On top of all that, our new phone system is not DSL friendly either.

I dont' think you can just downgrade, but you can just reinstall 98. Reformat and reinstall most likely be the easiest way of going about this I presume.

If you just did the ME upgrade, then you should be able to uninstall it. If not, then trickykid is right and you'll have to reformat and reinstall.

Did you install the full version of ME, or just the upgrade??

who the hell would use win ME(willingly)?

its the same as 98 but uses more ram!

the same thing as XP(i here it uses 64 megs base ram)

personally, i prefer win 95 because it uses the same kernel(HAHA) as the others and uses only 4 megs of ram
(plus you can get active desktop for it)

just make a start up(rescue) disk so that you can start up your comp with cd-rom support, and reformat and install 98
from that disk. ive had to do it hundreds of times.

if you don't want to format, you can just delete the windows directory, but you may need a dosshell thingy so that you don't have to keep answering the "derectory is not empty" replies

Save your important stuff to disk.. drivers(tho[ win98 will probably have them anyway) Address books, documents, Favourites etc and format the disk, go to cnet.com and search 'format' and you'll have win 98 running in a hour or soo.

The more Ram you have the more is eaten by windows, whatever version it may be...

I have 160 MB... i have 130 free after booting 98SE
a friend has 512MB... he has 380 free after booting the same

now for the maybe helpful part:
if you have so much stuff on your hds you need to backup just use you lan to temporarily store them on the other machine before formatting and reinstalling

yes, i hear your cries...im sorry to say but winME is just for computers that are very new! which means you will have to have at least a 800mHz cpu with 133mhz bus speeds (at least) and 128 megs of RAM... i have an ancient system that is damn - near a 486... i run win95 and suse 7.0 and want for nothing... i program, i run video games, i surf the net and even run some very awesome office suites and get more done than the people i used to work for who run WinME or even <gasp> NT...

Dont tell me it cant be done!

If all else fails, install linux
I had winME on a box for about 3 hours, that was all the time i needed to know it was bad... my wife still has it on her box, p3 1ghz, 256mb ram, 40 gig hd, still has to reboot every hour or so cause of low resources heh. i think i should talk her into letting me install linux on hers too, shed be amazed with a few days of not rebooting, not to mention when she sees a few weeks uptime lol.....

yeah crypt... my wife was pissed at me when i decided to turn over our home computer fully to linux. she put up with it for about 6 months then made me go out and get some type of microsoft os...so, of course, i bought win95 for only 30$ i refuse to pay the 180$ for ME especially when it sucks as bad as it does... as for me wife... i let her deal with the bsods...hehehehehe

Yeah, in buying a M$ os I'd go with the 95 also without a doubt. its a little less buggy and more stable. wow, never thought id use the words stable and M$ in the same sentence lol. ya know what tho, i wouldnt have a problem paying 130 or whatever for an os if it were atleast stable, secure out of the box (at least to some extent), and it let ya manipulate it to however ya desire, its nice getting that in linux for so much less money.

I love taking 486's and making them happy running on rh 5.2 l33t
