Just wondering if anyone plans to conduct a Linux party to counteract the Windows 7 release around October 22? Ubuntu 9.10 releases a week later on October 29, I think. I have a few friends who plan on attending or will be hosting a Windows 7 party and was trying to think of some cool ways to bring Linux out during these days. Any thoughts? I plan to have some different distributions available for them to take along with a big Tux cookie/cake. I know there are some very clever folks on this board that can help come up with some great ideas.
Bring a laptop if you can that's all glitzed up with Compiz and other fancy effects. Also be sure to demonstrate that you can do everything most users do with Windows on linux (document editing, photo editing, photo albums, music, video, etc).
Also, it wouldn't hurt to have some OpenDiscs available to highlight free software in general.
Alternatively, just ask them if they want to buy something from a company that created Songsmith.
am I the only one that thinks a "windows party" sounds like some kind of nickname to a themed 'adult' party... granted a kind of lame one where you look through windows.

That doesn't make sense. I've tried Windows 7 on a couple computers. It didn't work and I needed to revert to Vista. I guess if you manage to get Windows 7 to actually work, that is something special and you might want to celebrate.
I expect Linux to work. So when it does what I expect, that doesn't seem special enough to throw a party.

Personally, I am much, much too low-key about my operating system to throw a party for it. I wouldn't, any more than I would throw a party over a new set of tools (which an updated Linux distro, in the abstract, is) or over a newly bought vehicle. To do so, it would help to be either a Linux developer or a user who likes his/her toys and considers the computer and its software one of them.
[cough] That was not meant to disparage the above attitude.

Well, I guess the Vista-BugFix Pack is something to celebrate, if you use MS for anything other then video games.
Guess its time to spend some hard earned cash on the Wintendo, to update it to a 64bit version... I'm tired of the upper 4 gigs of ram being useless for gaming. (and loosing 512 of the lower 4 because of the graphics card)

WINE runs games . . . almost all games . . . save your money . . .
Yeah there is WINE, not that I have had much success with it in the past. Anyway, I will probably have to get a copy for work anyway, which means I won't be paying for it .
