Why does everything in Linux have to be so difficult?
This is a rant:
OK, I'm mucking about with SuSe 9.2. No problem there. It's a fine distro IMO.
Now I want to configure it as a samba server on a small network. I've done it before on ear;y redhats, MDK, Fedora, Ubuntu. It was frustrating, but I got there. I made enough notes to write a book.
So, how come the things I did on the other distros don't work on SuSe?
Using the Samba client on the SuSe box tells me everything's fine.
From a Windows client, the usual "You may not have permissions". I have permissions. I've opened everything up. I've disabled firewalls, I've configured users and made smb.conf so basic my grandmother could hack it.
"You may not have permissions"
I realise the problem may well be between the back of my chair and the keyboard, but really, you'd think by now we'd have some decent, usable configuration tools for samba. Especially ones that gave some meaningful feedback when errors occur.
You're right. Suse is a good distro and yes, it always seems to be the one that does things "a little differently". Take my advice. Stick with it and you'll be rewarded. If you really want to throw yourself in at the deep end then download slackware which will definitely teach you the ins and outs. I started out with MDK for three months and after a week of Suse, switched to Fedora and have never looked back. My best advice however is this. Dont let linux p*** you off. If it is, then go and have a cup of coffee or something. Life's too short.
Regards
Chris
