yea, we need to get the linux name in front of people. I've started, before I buy any hardware now, e-mailing the makers and asking if whatever I want is supported by linux. mac people used to do it to me all the time, call and ask if xx model hp printer or whatever is mac compatible, caused enough calls that hp came out with a bunch of new mac compatibel printers
Thats what I'm trying. I think my wife may be ready to switch to linux soon too. She is getting tired of windows updates and outlook crashes, it seems to decide there is no transport provider lately untill she reboots. I just have to get multimedia figured out, installed kmplayer and it seems to have taken over, anything video it wants to play but just goves a black screen. even if I change file associations it still tried to play, about to uninstall it.
Check Xine for video, there are multiple front ends (xine in the end is a series of libraries) or the lattest offical mplayer. There are actually a lot of programs that substitute those from Windows-land and have equal/better performance in Linux. Mind you though there are programs that will never have a Linux clone (like games )
Neither of us plays much games, but she gets e-mail from a lot of friends with videos or links to videos so I just need to make sure I have as much of that working as possible.
For me Xine plays just about anything video related I throw at it, when it can't play something, I use Mplayer, and most videos have a more standard format, so if one does not work, try other format. Oddly enough the best video format support (for me) by Xine is QuickTime, go figure
I think Kmplayer ios supposed to be a front end for Mplayer. I wonder if there is a kde wrapper for xine so I can run inline in Konq. Maybe I messed something up in the kmplayer install. I'm going to upgrade kde from the beta to the finished 3.2 soon anyway, maybe that will fix it
M$ definately has a stonghold on hardware manufacturers.
A while back, about a year or so, Gateway and Dell were getting into the AMD trend over Intel. Mainly for cost as well as performance issues.
I read an article that stated M$ threw their might at Dell and Gateway basically forcing them to NOT produce systems with AMD procs.
The same article mentioned the same process taking place when gateway was dabbing in the Linux desktop market.
Funny how money corrupts power. Isn't that how most wars start? Oil The blood of war as it has been put in the past.
Usually the AMD processors are put in systems for the home user and business users get the intel. Up until recently AMD's have always ran hotter and busines desktops they want cooler running so as to have fewer/no fans. I've always stuck to intel for those reasons as well.
I've never had problems with my AMDs running hot. Course I'm pretty much 100% amd (cept for my Sun systems) so I can't really debate that.
I went All AMD a couple of years ago because of Intels lack of support and steep prices. Not to mention that everything I was looking for in a stable proc pointed me to AMD over intel.
But for the common desktop user, who utilizes multimedia out the yinyang, the intel seems to be the way to go. I guess.
And as far as LInux isn't know... anyone see the superbowl comercial?
Pretty kewl. No matter how much you hate football (US styel that is) you can't deny that a superbowl commercial costs thousands even millions to air during the game. And now Linux is in the big time.
Lets hope it pays off.

I've stuck to AMD for 4/5 years now, and I've never had problems. My computer is a lot more silent than most intel comps It's all up to what kind of fan/thermal paste you use, and how you arrange your cables. I've found the harddrive to be a lot noisier than the CPU (since switching to Maxtor it's even more silent)
