I have to say one thing though... Windows has gotten a lot more stable than it used to. I have used MS product since Windows 3.5 and I have to say WIndows 2003 is an amazing improvement. I haven't seen a BSOD in my 500+ server environment in quite some time.

Linux has definitely won a place in my home, but I am a geek. I like breaking things, taking things apart, figuring stuff out. The problem is, corporate america doesn't think the same way. As much as I like Linux, I hate to admit, Windows has a more appealing desktop environment. It is easy to use and has enough financial backing to keep it owning 97% of the desktop marketshare.

I strongly believe it is only a matter of time until the penguin becomes a viable alternative and I believe that the ROI for a Linux implementation is a huge factor in the downfall of the MS empire, but this will take time.

Until then, I will be the only Infrastructure Architect in my Windows based environment who proudly uses the Penguin for all his immediate needs.
But, I still have Windows XP installed at home for my wife and child to use, not to mention my Recording software only runs on Windows...

Give it time though, it will definatel catch up..

I have found that XP has gotten slightly less stable than Windows 2000 and worse from a useability perspective.
After using Linux on a desktop now for over a year I think the tables have turned. Windows took more work fixing and maintaining than Linux does. I was spending a lot of time with AV update, anti-spyware updates, etc. I probably averaged an hour each day wasted on windows problems.
Windows 2003 server is nice, but it still suffers from the same political decisions that earlier versions do, i.e. integrates IE, OE, Mediaplayer so they can say that those are part of the OS and can't be removed. We just had to write a script following the steps in the MSKB article to remove outlook express since there were a couple vulnerabilities for it recently, but things like media player and internet explorer still need to be removed from the server OS.

why do you use linux (or maybe switch)?

There must be something wrong with me, I have just read all 115 pages.

I need to get out more.

One thing puzzles me, there is a lot of talk about why people use Linux, but not switch!

I use switch because it is so much more convenient than carrying cash. It comes with a reasonable financial package that can be run on almost any banks terminal, but I have been unable to do anything else with it.

Until this situation improves I will continue to use Linux.

If you do decide to get out more, then remember switch just incase you lock yourself out... or you could login remotely through ssh and ask linux to open the door for you :%

edit: i think i used a visa, it was flexible enough to get between the door and the frame. If you warm it up a bit it gets more flexible and should get around that bend made by the frame.....
I recon you could setup a home control system that opens doors, turns lights on and off through ssh... hmmm.....

hey kid i am using linux because it makes me use my HEAD not like your
stupid window$ before i think i was smart because i know the in and outs
of that system (micro$oft window$) until i met linux it change my life i understand
more what i never understand in window$ just viewing its codes, their configuration,
why this happened and if it is necessary and take a look window$ xp and that crtl
thing and that circle on the mouse kinda look like red hat and try window$ 2003
server it really looks like red hat so if you really think window$ is sooooo cool why
they are imitating red hat's GUI and hey linux is open source unlike window$ hiding
its errors know why people uses window$ specially businessman because they want
business because in linux everything is free unlike in window$ if you just create a
program or something they will pay you for dollars!oh i forgot did you know that
IE is executing a command on your back! in window$ im having a bugs life! i dont
like window$ because bill gates is making it too easy for us its like your dumb or
something or maybe he thinks you cant be a good administrator thats why they
made it easy so that you dont need to think! £Ä3

-------------
ever wonder why windows is expensive
because bill gates installs it for you
because bill gates configures it for you
because bill gates makes it secure for you
but at the end who learned ...
bill gates

No way, you have to be a freaking genius to use windows. No matter what who says, Linux is *much* easier to use. Nah, if I had to maintain a Windows network I'd never have a moments peace, as it is I'm not having problems to admin just over 400 workstations, and 10 servers.

And you can say what you want, but Windows is *not* stable. Or at least, the best I've seen it do is 3 weeks uptime on a relatively unused system. It doesn't give you diagnostics to work (Linux I just go to my log server, grep around a bit and usually have any problems pin pointed in an hour or two). No way I'd ever go back to using Windows.

In terms of stand alone systems (desktops for people working at home) you just don't get any better. I'm using Gentoo and it has *everything* I ever needed, from simple command line based text editors right through to the coolest graphics tools imaginable.

I use whatever best suits my needs, and Windows has not yet ever managed to do that (in spite of a lot of people I speak with trying to convince me, there is always something that I need that Windows *cannot* provide). Linux usually does the job, and what it does not provide, I just code myself. Given, not everyone can program.

My slack box is on. 24/7. adding removing progs, fiddling hardware, adding removing modules, compiling recompiling stuff, playing 3d games, down/uploading, ftp + http server...... only reboot for kernel/network changes.

it crashed once, can't remember when....

Ok, i switched to Linux about three or four months ago. I just wasn't ready to pay for Windows. It's like "try before you buy", i got a copy of XP from my friend and worked with it about one year and wasn't happy with it, that's all.

Plugins? Such as java/flash? Never had problems myself, but then again, Gentoo package management is absolutely brilliant. Anyway, I had to get the Java plugin working on Mandrake once, eventually I just installed the JDK from the binary provided by SUN and created the appropriate symlink for mozilla. So yea, I guess you are correct in your assesment of it being a pain in the ass.

And no, web browsing in Windows is as bad as it gets - both highly anoying and very insecure.

No problems here with the Mozilla browser and Fedora core 2 and Gentoo.

As long as you install Firefox and ignore Internet Explorer except for OS updates, browsing is OK, but I have more features I can use in Linux, but at least Firefox has tabs and a built in popup blocker.
