First, it may be the case on the win32 machine where you have a desktop firewall closing the connection. I had f-secure's firewall do this previously. Also, Xming needs to be running on win32 machine before you fire up the ssh session.
I was successful following the instructions at xming where they use the command line version of putty. Note: Even with compression enabled, it takes quite a bit of bandwidth so it may be the case that it is painfully slow drawing.
Xming is easily one of the great OSS projects for win32.
