using putty and xming from windows to linux

I am encountering problems in successfully launching a remote session of linux on my windows (xp) box. I can use putty (ssh) to login in to the linux server. When I try Xming, the screen goes grey but no gnome kicks off on the laptop.

I've added the ip address of the windows box to the etc/hosts table.
I've set enable=true on the kdm file and made sure all hosts had access on the Xaccess file.

Am i missing something here.

Thanks for your time.

First, it may be the case on the win32 machine where you have a desktop firewall closing the connection. I had f-secure's firewall do this previously. Also, Xming needs to be running on win32 machine before you fire up the ssh session.

I was successful following the instructions at xming where they use the command line version of putty. Note: Even with compression enabled, it takes quite a bit of bandwidth so it may be the case that it is painfully slow drawing.

Xming is easily one of the great OSS projects for win32.

Moved: This thread is more suitable in <General> since it's a windows-problem in connecting to the Linux box, and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.
