Unix in the Navy

I just learned something cool that I thought I would share with some of you, maybe some of you know already but here it is. I was just messing around with an HP 9000 D server that I got from school and my uncle called and asked what I was up to and I told him I was just messing around with this Unix server. He said, "Oh yah, I hate Unix. I haven't used it much but when I flew planes some of the onboard systems used Unix and I had to mess with it sometimes."
I had no idea that the Navy used Unix onboard their aircraft. Just thought that was cool little bit of info and that some of you might enjoy it.

Well you do have to realize that the Navy and the majority of their planes have been around longer than Windows so it would only make sense they are using an OS that has been around for quite sometime and has proven itself more stable than our friends in Redmond..

Actually I am surprised they are using UNIX on their planes. I would have figured on some customized software.

Actually it is custom software, or at least it was when I was in, but it was based on Unix. Who knows what they'e using these days?

You may be suprised at how modern the Navy's aircraft are. I was in Naval Aviation myself. But happily, they don't trust something like windoze in their machine. I can just imagine some pilot having to reboot his avionics at 600mph. LOL

I dont know what you are on about

The Royal Australian Navy uses Windows
and the Royal Navy ( UK ) uses Windows on its nuclear subs !
whoa that 's frightening
now that could give a new meaning to the "Blue screen of death"

yeah just reboot
and half a dozen Tridents leap from the water

reminds me of that movie
"whoops apocalypse"

I actually asked an Aussie sailor why they used Windows and not something unix based and he said they needed a system anyone could use ......
floppy thinks "what you mean any terrorist could get on board and fire a gun or something, and hey, if you don't know what to do, theres always clippy to help"

thinks to himself " no ! better leave that one unsaid - he doesn't look like he has a sense of humour"

Philosophical thought 132555 : Are terrorists like Bin Laden really this dangerous or are we more at risk, when some sailor somewhere playing minesweeper clicks on the WRONG type of mine, theres a fatal exception error, windows reboots and exit human race stage right.

have a nice day everyone !

the US AirForce uses a combination of win2k pro with win2k servers and some older Unix stuff. used to be all Unix when I was active back in the late 80s early 90s, now the majority is win2k.

very scary, and the data is always taking a dump.
