I read somewhere that the greatest flame war was not which OS is best, nor which language is best. It was about which editor was best : Emacs or vi. Is this true? Anyone...
He's right, there's no war...no one is silly enough to prefer emacs. Big, bloated software is the realm of MS, not unix. Besides, if you have to go to a dozen varieties of *nix to work on them, you will come to love the beast that is VI.
This is undoubtedly true because, although some people will cling to a bloated text editor for reasons unknown to us logical people, the majority use a text editor that isn't too complicated: vim, nano, or pico.
I have to say to you people that I love Emacs, and don't see anything in Vi/Vim to attract me. That's why I asked this question in the first place, as I never thought people were crazy enough to use vi. :-)
When I have X support, I use emacs, when I don't its vi.
Emacs seems easier to use for writting C/C++ programs, vi faster for editing config files and the like.
