slow wifi on windows-7

hi, i was trying to download a large file in firefox but it said it was getting 5.5 kb/s with 8 days, 12 hours left to go.
i stuck a usb harddrive and restarted the pc to start xbmc/ debian linux and using wget i get this speed:
Code:
Saving to: `battlefield2demo.exe'

35% [==============================>                                                          ] 200,602,424  637K/s  eta 16m 2s
what would be the cause for the discrepancy.

It might be a driver issue, try finding a different version. Also check under the device settings, and make sure that it is using the correct channel, and also make sure the speed is set to at least 50mbps, and not using any kind of power save which might throttle bandwidth down to 'save power'. Also if it is a g card, make sure under the settings you choose g instead of b.
