What the moral of all this story as I see it?
All information can't be (easily) trusted.
As I understand now, ideally Internet was "meant" to provide information for everyone about anything - "the whole world at your fingertips", without boundaries. So in situation like this you ideally should be used to get clear picture from any nearby source. Instead, area were shut off (it is said all communications were shut off, including cellphones - retranslator towers were destroyed). And Internet were turned into informational battlefield, because many sources of news tried to affect people's opinion by manipulating their opinion through emotions. Reports about killing civilians by Russian/Georgian troops could be created by interested party to enrage "average Joe"-type people. This kind of action could be used by any side (russian, american or georgian). Just thinking about all of the possible interpretations and true intents of every side is enough to drive person nuts.
This whole thing is sad. There are many opinions floating around, they are all realistic to some extent, but there is no way to make sure what is really true, because all information is unverified and cannot be easily verified (too bad there is no "universal truth provider certificate" or something), because in some situation emotion-based opinion of entire society can overwhelm sanity. So there are 2000 dead and hard to tell who should be responsible.
That's why I wrote about that "sometimes it's not possible to rely on facts and evidence" - Moore might be representing his true point of view in 9/11 or he might be using clever propaganda. Parties that disagree with him might rely on true facts, or they might be using incorrect information.
I just hope this conflict won't evolve into something bigger, because it could be much more realistic "end of world" scenario than "Hadron Collider". I'd prefer one century of peace, since there were too many wars in 20th century.
P.S. Sorry for long post. I was thinking about all this some time, so I had to post it somewhere.
I'm glad people exist out there who have the courage to think this and even post it. And I'd have to agree with you on the points that you made. You can't trust anyone especially the media. The only way to know what really went on was to be there and see it, but I'm thinking you would not have survived the ordeal if you had seen it (either because you would have been killed accidentally, or on purpose for you had seen too much).
I too hope that this conflict does not evolve into the second Cold War or the Third (and final) World War. But, in all actuality it just might. And you know, some part of me even wants it to, why ? Because it may just relieve growing tension and it will likely decide the next superpower ... I'm betting on China. Or if the world annihilates itself, well I guess they were gonna do that anyway sooner or later.
As for Michal Moore, he was probably paid to do this, spread propaganda. It's simple you give people two choices and they'll believe one or the other. Either one is fine with them, but neither one is right. If you want to know what's right you have to think clearly, logically, and carefully. If you ponder for a while the answer will come to you, but only if your mind is free enough. If it is not, then all those barriers they have setup in your head, they'll stop you, and most times for most people they do.

That's mighty nice of you - since I live in Brasil right now I do look forward to it with minimal involvement from my side
On a other (more realistic) thought:
The idea of the US and other countries to get georgia into the NATO is rather moronic.
First of all if a country in the NATO gets attacked all the other members have to respond.
I doubt thats a good idea with a country where you don't even know where they land next elections as is usual in those spheres.
Also this leads me to question the wisdom of foreign policy - if russia makes a deal comparable to the NATO contract with Kuba (or lets say the Bermudas) tomorrow who is coing to jump how high?
I honestly don't see the point of the 'missile shield.' The many excuses were, "To protect Europe from a missile threat from Iran." Really? Since when do the Iranians and Europeans have a grudge against each other? I seriously doubt the Iranians would even be stupid enough to decide to attack Europe. They don't have any reason to.
Then the other excuse: "To protect Europe from a possible strike from North Korea." Ok, this is just fucking stupid. These excuses were made by Sec. of State, Condoleeza Rice by the way. Since when does North Korea have the capability of striking that far? Come on, seriously now. The Russians are right, there is no real point to this 'missile shield' and only antagonizes Russia.
If there is going to be another cold war, or WWIII, it is because the US is stirring it up.
I think, both sides have been stirring the pot for some time now. Russians want their imperial ambitions back, and Americans became too thrilled by their emergence as the only superpower after the collapse of communism. It's not just one side's fault. Too bad for both of them, but I guess, rather good for China.

In German it's Kuba, and meister is German for master, so I#m guessing that crashmeister is an expatriate German or from other German-speaking nation...
