question about the notice at the top of this sub-forum
I just observed the notice at the top of this sub-forum, mandating polite behavior. Is that new? I don't remember seeing it last time I looked in non-NIX General, which was probably not recently.

I don't see that, so it must be user-specific. ;-)
PLEASE NOTE: All LQ Rules apply to the General forum. Flame wars, personal attacks, hostility, insults and behavior of that nature will not be tolerated. Differing opinions are one of the things that make this site great, but to benefit from differing opinions the discourse must happen respectfully and thoughtfully... without insult and personal attack. Members who are unable or unwilling to participate in General under those parameters will not be permitted to do so. If you see behavior of this nature please report it.
I am using W10 to browse the forums today, and I saw the notice message earlier today. In the upper RH corner there was an oversized reddish X, when I clicked it the notice went away, and has not come back after subsequent logins to the forum. Maybe it is a one-time notice or something.

The notice is new and will appear for all members until it is dismissed. We haven't decided how long it will remain, but "January" seems like a reasonable estimate, although the increased moderation will remain. It's simply a reminder that LQ should be a welcoming and friendly place, but the thread linked by frankbell was part of the impetus for adding the notice. If you have any feedback, let us know.
