I just bought a Transcend T.Sonic 610-TS1GMP610C 1GB mp3 player, a quick player to carry in a pocket or strap around while i'm working out. It had all the regular contents in the package like strap, warranty, manual, usb etc along with a driver cd. Ah a driver cd, now i can get it on in Linux, or so i thought, i connected everything and fired up Linux, put the driver cd in, nothing there, hmm strange, re-checked, still no driver, there was just the regular Windows driver. I starting cussing all the companies i could remember in my fury, damn it. As an afterthought i opened the manual, and lo and behold, there were the golden wordings 'LINUX - NO DRIVER NEEDED, JUST CONNECT AND MOUNT'. I said what , am i really seeing this, my joy knew no bounds, hooray, i did a quick 'fdisk -l' and there it was, the beautiful '/dev/sda1'. I mounted, copied the songs i needed and was off to the gym.
Wow, this is an experience, i'll remember forever. Go Linux, you rock man!
Do you imagine that Linux might in fact be the OS in that little gadget??
Linux is not going to take over the world by meeting M$ head-on. Far more likely that it happens in little nibbles like this. Cell-phone, nokia tablet, TIVO, your MP3 player....
Since most mp3 players are nothing but a small usb harddrive, it is not so surprising that it works out of the box. For what is that driver CD for? I am pretty sure that Windows XP would not need any additional drivers either, so it might be for older MS operating systems. It mounts automatically my mp3 player and flash drives.
Maybe Mega, but i'm least bothered about Windows, that statement is an official stamp for the sign of things to come in the future, atleast to me, and that gives me a BIG high!!
My brother recently get and MP3/MP4 player and was also worrying about it working on Linux (since I've eradicated windows from any PCs i can get my hands on ).
On the side of the box the supported systems included OS/X and Linux 2.4!
I was very pleased, but not very surprised, since it was a no-name Chinese made player.
So far all the Chinese products I've bought work exceptionally well on any platform.
Their DVD players even have no-region chips in them!
I have a Sony Walkman. The Java-based plugin at SourceForge doesn't work for me, and I think my last resort is to either try WINEing SonicStage, or hack it to play Ogg Vorbis. (It plays nasty ATRACs, and they end up with the file extension .oma when the drive's mounted)

That is very true. I only had two pieces of hardware where Linux was stamped on the box. It was a cheap soundcard and a network card. I do, would love to see Linux name on more games and hardware as well. I think nvidia and ati cards could start putting Linux as a supported OS, for example (don't know if they do, though).
In the box of your new mp3 (it looks very good btw) does it stand linux on the back/front of the box or is it only on the manual?
most of the mp3 players i have encountered are just usb drives with extra electronics that plays mp3s.... so they all work with linux, mac and windows (newer than 98se) without drivers.
the only thing thats on teh driver CD of mine is the win 98 drivers and a bundles jukebox/mp3 management/ripping program that came with the player as windows has no decent software to do this bundeled.
