M$ lifts GPL code !

Take a look:

Microsoft lifts GPL code, uses in Microsoft Store tool
http://www.withinwindows.com/2009/11...ft-store-tool/

I hope they get sued for it. But, they probably won't.

Yes, this was on /., but I want to post it here, because nothing can be intelligently discussed on /.

I hope they get sued also. Unfortunately, Microsoft's pockets are very deep... they can bribe their way out of anything.

Hopefully they'll remove the offending code.

Oh, man! Heh! MENIS FENIS BENIS GENIS DENIS DENNACE. Heh heh!
But even then, is it still possible that they haven't lifted GPL code at all? Perhaps the similarity is a coincidence?

Reading the comments on that article, it's not clear either what the extent of the violation is, or even if the offending code was really stolen from ImageMaster, and even suggests that the ImageMaster credits lists IBurn by Microsoft, IMAPIv2 Code Samples(Windows SDK), and "various MSDN Forums"

Microsoft have used GPL software in the past, but I think we need a little more evidence - such as a statement from the author - before invoking the SFLC on this one.

Edit: The writer of the software has now commented, and suggested that the origins of the code are in 7-zip, not the Windows code samples.

I know I shouldn't post in this section anymore, but I wanted to finish off this thread:

Microsoft Takes Responsibility For GPL Violation
http://news.slashdot.org/story/09/11...-GPL-Violation

This is the first time I hear M$ actually doing something decent. If they keep this up, I might consider calling them MS instead of M$. Of course, it wasn't very nice to steal the code in the first place (even if it was 3rd party that did it, they were still responsible, and should have checked).
