Yes, but Microsoft are known for using temps on a long-term basis. These are people they should be employing on a permanent basis, but they prefer to keep them as temps because that way they get no benefits. And can be dropped without notice. I hear up to a third of Microsoft's staff were temps.

In Texas, (not sure about other MS Sites) MS will only employ a contract for 365 days. No longer.
In the past what you are saying is true, however they were sued about 5 years ago and lost. they were forced to pay each contract employee a whopping $1000.
However, the situation you mention is no longer the case at least in Las Colinas & Redmond.
and yes, I have done and still do contract jobs for M$. I have yet to find a linux job that will pay as much as M$ does.
