Loki

Why did Loki close down? Can't seem to find any info on their website or on google search. I would have thought that quality games for linux would be a nice market niche.

If I reember correctly it was because of bancrupcy or something very close.

By the time I found Linux and the OSS world Loki was long gone. :( I would love to see another company like Loki come around, I'd buy their games.

I seem to remember seeing similar comments before Loki opened. Unforunately for Loki, not enough people shared the sentiment. Native games would be excellent and a few are out there, but not enough of the community actually are willing to put their money where their mouth is - witness the number of people that complain about paying a few dollars for Cedega. Sad, but true.

There actually is another one starting up; Linux Game Publishing. They're the ones who ported Postal 2 over to linux among other games (although the other games aren't all as, shall we say, controversial as Postal 2).

You kinda get spoilt by Linux and F/OSS, and too used to just downloading whatever software you want, when you discover that you need/want it. When you come across some Linux software that someone's trying to sell, the old-fashioned way, and you have to get out your credit card in order to obtain a copy, you think something like...I have to buy it? How quaint !!

Or I do, anyway.

I would've bought Cedega if only they accepted my Debit card ...

and they never make a living off of it as well.

then how did torvalds buy his bmw?

vasudevadas 09-28-2004 01:16 PM

Gotta admit, he's got you there. IIRC rms used to make enough selling Emacs tapes to live on. Certainly not enough to buy a Beemer with, of course, but the point stands. Some people *do* make a living from open source software.

So he creates an operating system used by millions and all he gets is a bmw and a house? Sign me up with microsoft...

MIcrosoft would probably employ you as a temp, so you get no sick leave, or paid holiday...
