Is dementia or being lazy the cause of GUI popularity?

The last couple of years I have found myself using more apps by GUI. I used to think pounding the keyboard was the only way to go.

I used fdisk and later cfdisk to partition my hds and now try and dig up a live cd with gparted. I used to enjoy trying to put scripts together but now try and find something that will work through a search then copy and paste. If I do have to use bash I have to use the man for about all command -options.

A month ago I thought the cure might be that old hard punch keyboard so went and bought one of those silent soft touch. It did not help.

Simplest explanation: the GUI apps have advanced to the point where they have started meeting your needs.

Sometimes I use a GUI, sometimes a CLI, for the same job. Depends on what mood I'm in. I'm not bothered about whether I appear to be a noob or a 1337 h4xx0r.

ok.let me get this straight (i lol'd while thinking at the phrase)
EVERYTHING is GUI driven in our days.Just take a look at the ads. They are all colorful and such. Go to the store. You have to choose between 2 candy : 1 is in a nice colorful pocket that looks so awesome
2 is the same candy but it does not have the nice colorful pocket but is simply put in a branded bag (the brand name with black)

both have the same price (!)
which one should you choose?

well i don't know you but i'd take the colorful one.
the same with GUIs

Vim is colourful... so is nfte, and w3m, as well as oleo... all these can run in a windowed CLI...

Re: w3m, if you run it in a framebuffer terminal, you get images, too.

Seriously, I've done it on my desktop machine when I was still having issues with my video card (GPU fan needed oil; that's all fixed now though). It barely looks any different from Firefox; the main differences being that the text is light-on-dark, there's no formatting of text (e.g. size, bold/italic/underline, etc.), and everything's (obviously) keyboard-driven. Although perhaps one could work something out with gpm...?

GUI's are easier and more intuitive than CLI. But CLI is more powerful. I use both.

So you have the same problem I have, out of sight, out of mind. you'll know your getting bad when you look at somebody you have worked with several years and have to ask them what there name is, or even better have to think about what your own name is when signing paper work.
Yup I'm almost there. Now, where did I put the clicky thing?

You and I would get along well as neighbors. I could talk to you everyday without the fear of telling you the same thing I told you yesterday.

Interesting observation, and I like when people wonder about their own behaviour. I do that as well myself. How old are you? What is your history in computer use?

lol, well, you know, I may be young, but sometimes I do this. I'm not good with names, so I often don't remember people's names, especially if they're not common names, or if I have not associated their name with a face. I try not to call them any name, because I may get it wrong. Sometimes I do put plates in the fridge and find them later and wonder how they got there.

This varies with how tired I am. If I'm really tired, signing my name is a challenge as well. If I haven't had a vacation in a while the effects add up.

I am 68 and have been using linux about six years. Total computer use about 18 to 20 years.

I owned a small business and in order keep up with the book work it was hire a book keeper or buy a computer. Those first six months were cram and learn. All self taught. I was forced to retire at 62 for health reasons. It is a hobby now but some might call it an addiction.
