Just got a phonecall from my girlfriend who's just got to work (she's a manager at a blockbuster superstore) to find a smashed window, a shop covered in glass and no rental dvd's at all. so that'll be around £30,000 gone forever.
Uh-oh, who does like 'em ? Acid, don't be so upset about the robbery - I bet it was all covered with insurance - BlockBuster ain't a local deli - they are world wide, and I guess they must protect its business.very well, I've seen couple of BB's here with trashed windows and police tape surrounding them - next thing I know - they are back on their feet with the same movie/games selection. And I really feel sorry for you girlfriend, now she has to go through all that intorrogation and yada-yada-yada.
d00d, why don't they keep it in their home? What can't you d/l off the internet nowadays? They must just be "thrill seekers" and need an A$$ kickin or 2. With any luck they will get caught selling em to some undercover cop.
That's too bad Acid, sorry to hear you had a bad day

well they stole them because they now actually have possesion of £19,000 of merchandise which they can sell on for a vast amount of money...
sure it's all insured and all that, but it's my girlfriend who has spent all day in a blind panic with her boss trying to sort things out. I hate the criminals for what they do, not the companies financial loss, but their financial gain, when all they deserve is a kick in the teeth...
being philosophical it's so often the people that deserve the least that get the most, and vice versa.

This is very true, alot of the time. But at the end of the day, after the money is gone, who is going to feel like they have accomplished more? The theif who spends 15-20 minutes jackin stuff, and then maybe 2 weeks selling it (probably on ebay or something), or the person who has a decent job, likes what they do, has no problems with the law, and can actually have a family and teach them morals and such.
So let it go, and forget about it. Help your g/f get over it and move on as well, the more you dwell on it, the more it will bother you and ruin even more of your time. I would not let 1 more second bother me about something someone did/does to intentionally ruin my day. Otherwise, who wins?
Cheer up buddy, it's always better than it would seem.
Here's a thought provocer (sp?):
What's the strangest thing you've ever seen pinched (I don't mean actually witnessed the theft of, I mean the aftermath)?
I'll start off: In my first year at Plymouth Uni (UK), I lived in Devonport (the dodgy area of the city) and saw a car on bricks. Obviously this is not particularly strange as many people do this to prevent it being stolen. So what had been pinched? All the glass! The front windscreen, the side windows including the quaterlights, the back window (the hand-warmer wires had been cut out of the bodywork), the sun roof, and the headlights! Why on earth would anyone want to pinch this amount of glass from a car? Oh, and I am presuming that it had all been pinched due to the amount of general damage done to the rest of the car - but no sign of broken glass!

Hehe! Again, in my first year at Uni, my housemates were on their way back from a nightclub when they decided to pinch a 'Men At Work' roadsign. They got all the way back to the halls of residence when the halls' security guard caught them. He instructed them to take it back to the site, and he followed them down in the car (driving at around 4mph). When they got there they found some policemen there. Needless to say the policemen were very interested as to why these students were walking around with a roadsign in their possesion. Conveniently it took the security guard a few minutes to reach the site, thus allowing plenty of time for my housemates to sweat it out with the police. All was sorted when the security guard decided to step in and explain to the police what had happened. They didn't pinch any more roadsigns after that!
Although I agree with the action the guard took I'm so glad I was a student in Holland.
No dorms, no halls, no supervision!!! Yeah!!!!!
It's so funny that every exchange student who has been to Holland at going back does not want to live under the supervision of a dormitory any more
At eighteen you're considered an adult by law and you should not have to suffer form any kind of supervision anymore.
Anyways to get back on topic: students have a way of knicking all kind of things, at least when they are in a group (they don't have the guts to do anything on their own generally).
The big thing here in Holland are the bikes (off course).
One thing that stands out in the thread, is that all of us sympathize with the acid_kewpie's friend - it's a real bummer when you get something stolen from you, whether it's your personal property or something from work.
If it's yours you feel a personal loss of some sort, if it's work, you tend to feel aggrieved because the thief has done something that makes your work life more stressful and I would say that even with business theft's, the companies - rightly or wrongly - pass any increase in costs on to the customer - so its not just "kewp's" friend who has paid the price in stress but all of us who suffer financially.
As for Anne's (and others) road sign analogies, that is something that particularly annoys me, I personally have acquaintances who have suffered because some mindless Berk has remove a road sign, i.e. they have collided with something because of the lack of the road sign. I and my colleagues spend a lot of time on the road at night and in the early hours, and the signage makes a definite difference when road safety is involved - though I am able to put this into perspective and would not advocate the death penalty for such minor offenses/inconveniences.
As regards to "punishments" for minor offenses, I feel that it can be quite difficult for the "authorities" to make the punishment to fit the crime - and from watching the TV recently, that can also be difficult when they have to deal with something major as well!
