The infected users won't lose their internet service. Their computers will be trying to use nameservers that don't exist.

Try explaining that to an average user.
No DNS == no Internet.

May be this is a wake up call for many people to actually think about topics like the security of their systems. I say: Let them run into it.

They're better off without internet until they can get their computer set up professionally and they learn some security practices. Until then everything they do on the internet may well be being recorded, passwords, bank details and all.

usually when those casual folks (which make up 99% of the computer using populace) ran into unresolvable problems , they just format their HD and start all over.
i can't recall them "learning" from the experience of running into whatever they ran into ;p

cheers

When are people going to learn to be cybersmart? Why do they continue on clicking those bogus banners, opening emails from the unknown that leads to phishing attacks and having multiple toolbars at their web browsers.

Dont worry, theres professional 'security' companies out there doing all sorts of dodgy stuff-

http://www.troyhunt.com/2012/02/scam...irus-call.html

I get a minimum 2-5 calls a month from that same scam. I get it so often I've figured out how to get them to hangup. 'Really? I've got junk files on my computer? Hmm....what is my IP address, and how did you tie it to this phone number?'. Instant hangup. Its faster than 'what windows? I dont use a microsoft OS....'. I've once explained to one of those scammers who called himself an 'I.T. professional' that there are other OSes...and that I'm not 'breaking the law' using them.

Sadly I've not had one of those <censored> call me as I think it could be fun.
To me any unsolicited approach by anyone is a scam until proven otherwise. I was taught that by my dear old mom who, not coincidentally, has yet to have her PC infected with malware.

They arent. They only exist to make us superior ones feel smart.

Smile

These kinds of things seem to affect two types of people.

One is people who use dangerous apps and things like torrents and have stolen data. I don't care about them at all.

I do feel for common folks that have no idea about computers. Maybe their kid installed it and said stupid stuff like you need to run as admin, you don't need a security suite and don't bother with updates.

Gee, wonder if my system is secure?
