Lose of internet connection after update to Ubuntu 10.10

Not sure this right place for this. After updating from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 lost internet connection - was instantaneous loss. Wired connection computer to router. Icon on computer shows "wired connection 'auto Eth0'active" The router shows line connected ok. Computer shows connection is established. Connection information menu shows details such as IP address broadcast address and other details. Where do I go from here to reconnect to internet. Thankyou in advance.

In reply to your request

lspci | grep ethernet No output

lsmod There is a lengthy readout because the computer cannot access the net I cannot send it tos you. I printed out a hard copy which is a little over an A4 size page. What would you be looking for in the read out I may be able to find it and type that section and send to you.

ifconfig
Here is the read out which I have typed.

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:24:1d:54:19:6d
inet addr:192.168.1.3 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

The system runs normally I've tested various programs etc with no problems. The only problem is the internet connection has failed after upgrade. I followed all instructions as per the download site. When the computer rebooted I had no internet connection. I've been unsuccessful in solving the problem. This is at least the 4th upgrade this is the only major problem I've had associated with upgrades. I'm involved in malaria research forecasting where outbreaks will occur someone else can take over until I overcome this connection problem. Thank you in advance

Well, provided you're using DHCP this looks like you have a properly configured network-connection.
Are you sure, that your browser is configured properly? What does your browser show if you try to open a webpage?
Please look at /etc/resolv.conf, is there a correct entry of the DNS-server?
OK, if this all is set up properly, could you please run tcpdump (or a similar program) and then send a ping to your router and (for example) www.linuxquestions.org or www.google.de. Please capture the output and post it here.

Markush. Thank you for your suggestions they are appreciated. I finally took the cowards way out and re-installed 10.04. I am having no trouble at all with the reinstall. Am able to connect to the internet without any problems I'm back to where I was before the attempted upgrade to 10.10. I have no idea why the upgrade allowed the system to function normally except for access to the internet. Computers can move in mysterious ways. Thankyou again. Enjoy the coming festive season which the shopping centres have been forewarning for the last two months. Regards from Down Under
