how to promote a website ?

HI Folks,

i guess this is a pretty mundane question , but at the same time it's a tricky one.

so assuming that you've a website what do you think would be the best way to get it out there (i mean getting more visitors to it)

btw , i'm not talking about commercial websites but more or less about social networking sites for instance a website just like LQ.

would kind of things would you focus on (or perhaps avoid) in order to promote it?

i would appreciate the insights

cheers

Put up links on social networking sites. And add your website to googles database. (that's what I would do)

Well , not a bad idea indeed however there is one major problem..

how do you manage to sustain the links or even getting them onto social networking sites like forums for instance without getting you labeled as a spammer?

cheers

There are a number of sites which will offer good advice on doing this. Backlinks are one - where you leave a decent and useful comment on a site which will allow you to leave your URL. Check out Technorati as a good start point.

People tend to include the addresses of their website in their signatures. I think it is within most forums' rules.

Use social networking sites that are compatible with the content of your site.
However, most important is to create a site people want to see.

+1. I think this is most excellent advice. Implementing it in a way that adds to and stands out in the panoply of sites is a whole different question...

Well i was going to reveal the url later on but since you asked for it

Here it is:

NiteCo.com

a short description : It's a content provider/host , basically a social networking site where ppl can contribute stuff.

I know that you're very familiar with this concept...

among the most recognized features is video uploading , article writing or "content hosting" for short , as well as various forms of user communication facilities like chatting , commenting on videos , articles..etc and private messaging.

also, the site offers an inhouse search engine that indexes content automatically after creation , therefore allowing users to reach the content by running a search... etc ..etc

what i personally view as "unique" about this search engine is that the user can "pick" any search results therefore increasing it's fitness , this method is theoratically safe (or at least much more resistent) against votebotting attacks as experienced on youtube for instance.

Oh and i almost forgot to say that i'm reworking the current design as well as I'm working on new features such as friend add/removing , subscribing and other common features that are associated with social networking.

so far for a description

now the question is ,

what do you think about it?

any good advice on how to promote this?

well that's very true , but when it comes to sites like this (NIteCo) it's a bit different because what ppl are actually seeing is what other ppl upload or write...etc ...and that's basically the best idea that a human conceived media has ever come up with.

it comes down basically to whether ppl can use it or not ,
mentioning user friendlyness , what's your opinion on that ?

cheers
