just curious as to how many play dungeons and dragons. I was think of creating a DMs Tool to help in running of a game session.
I know there are least 2 other projects like this floating around. though it doesn't look like they are being developed anymore.
My real reason for wanting to do this is I like D&D and I really need to work on my Software design skills and I needed a project to do this with. Well what do you think of this idea, constructive criticism welcome.

I don't play D&D, but I do play GURPS once in a while. I think GURPS is a much more flexible system than D&D, the GM can choose which rules to follow and which ones to adapt, only uses d6's, and character creations is much more customized. I could list a lot more... huge magic system with MANY non-combat spells, jobs, classes in society, no character classes or level-ups, improvised magic. The list just goes on...

I play once or twice a week, run about once a month (when I have time, which I do not, currently), and mostly do it to hang out with my friends.
To be honest, the only thing I use a computer for is to keep notes on (I type faster than I write). I have a punky old Pentium laptop that can barely handle Slack 8.1 and Openwindows, but it works for my needs.

I used to play a decade back...but the problem was that all the people I knew and played with were past the point where it was 'fun' for me.
Started out with a session every couple of days during lunch in a corner of the library...then every lunch...then sometimes on a weekend.
I mean, I like the idea of a sunday afternoon game...but for them it wasn't good enough unless you played 3 nights a week for 3 hours and ALL weekend every weekend.
I didn't stick around much once it got there...I mean, I love RPGs, but not to the exclusion of a life. (hmmmm..actually that's the same reason I quit Everquest....).
I still know people who are into D&D, but again, I find it hard to meet "moderates"...the people I know who are still into it are like the people I described above.
Now I stick to Morrowind and singleplayer RPGs on the PC.
(confession mode) I used to be one of those people tcaptain warns about.
Obsessional is the word. Fortunately it wears off after while and probably ten years on it wouldn't ever get so bad again - besides I now have linux to occupy my idle moments
But ... I still have my character sheets and a detailed record of who did what in whose dungeon ...
Good luck with your project, though those days are past your post brought back some memories.
I played some third edition recently. I have been playing D&D and AD&D since a kid, though had'nt played in years. Let me say 3rd edition was the most annoying role-playing experience I've ever had. It was magic. The strategic decisions you make are through combining feats/skills with your attributes. I was almost certain that we were always forgetting something. Very very picky little rules, then a bazillion exceptions to those rules. IMO it doesnt get any better than 2nd Edition AD&D, GURPS, or Palladium and Wizards of the Coast can kiss my monopoly hating butt.

OMG.... That is EXACTLY where and when we would play!!! HOLY COW!
