has anyone tried NixOS?

I have my linux laptop with Debian and slackware. I also have a UNIX laptop with FreeBSD. I have a second hd on that laptop and I've been trying to figure out what else I'd like to try. On distrowatch there was an article about NixOS that I found interesting. I was just curious if anybody else had tried it and if so what do you think? I know I can try it through VB but I've just had too many problems using it.

I know this isn't a really interesting topic and I thought about adding a joke or something but I'm just not that funny!!

it's not helpful to not provide a link to the OS in question, but from what i remember it installs everything in it's own environment, replacing classic gnu/linux package management with something far more bloated.

Cool

Interesting OS: a Linux that is 'totally NOT' Linux! Bizarre Wow: no /{usr,bin,lib}
That 5/15/2017 DW review has praise (esp for developers) but no-FHS=no-go.

SearchLQ (2users); add Guix IF one wants to web-research the cool critter.

For that starving partition, how about CentOS/Fedora (to play with common distros)
Or arch/gentoo/LFS/suse/.../ReactOS (WinNT-like).
Or for pre-installed! .vdi storage (VB = all OSes running simultaneously, without reboots)!
>"...had too many problems using it." ?it= VB on Linux -OR- NixOS in a VB?

Myself: extreme opposite 7MB distro: a busybox (kernel+shell VBox; XP host!)
I recently discovered my *single executable distro* can wget&dpkg most anything
(but *I* become the manual pkg mgr dependency-resolver)

Sorry it's taken so long to respond but I don't remember seeing an email. The really like what I saw about Minix. I use Debian, but I've tried gentoo, arch, opensuse, slackware, and numerous others distroS that I've used on an old laptop, and I have Kubuntu installed on a notebook. I just find a lot of distros to be similar which is why I thoroughly enjoy FreeBSD. Don't get me wrong, I still think linux is great. But the way I read the article it seems like this is a combination of Linux and Unix. But I don't like a lot of bloatware if that's the case and I'm willing to try other distros. I find the installation to be the most interesting part. Thanks for the advice. Sorry I didn't provide a link but I have a bad habit of thinking about something and expecting people to just know what I'm talking about. I'll take your advice in mind before I make a decision.

If you are just exploring and looking for something different, you might try Haiku. The home page is at the link below. I installed it to a flash drive a couple of years ago and although I don't use it regularly, I will boot it up from time to time. There is an FAQ on the page at the link below from which you can get some basic info.
