no way to connect wlan on nixos 14.04

Hello everyone, i have just installed nixos 1404 on my old 1gb mem; 2800ghz cpu; computer with the kde desktop but cannot find any way to locate mt rt73 based wlan dongle. The last kde distro i used was pclinuxos which had a circle with a x in it to right click for choosing from the detected networks. I can find nothing in nixos. I tried opening terminal and using nm-applet to no avail. Also ifconfig gets 'command not found' along with other network commands a googling suggested i use.I would appreciate any help on this matter as it appears to be a good system but until i get on the net i won't be suggesting it as an alternative to people. Thanks in advance for anyones time on this matter.Brian
PS. if a suggestion for installing a driver materializes please include idiot proof instructions as to how to install it as i will have to download it from another system (on same computer, mint works)

These commands need to be run as root or using sudo. Have you done that?

And what command did you use that provoked the 'command not found' response? Has the net-tools package been installed?

can't connect to nixos by wlan

all net cmds i used provoked command not found and as for 'net-tools' i don't know about them i asume you suggest i download them. Any suggestions as to how i get them without a connection to the net, or can i get them from another distro thats on the net and if so what do i download and how do i install. You are talking to someone with no idea of programming or code structure or installing drivers on linux. Also if i get to the point of having the net tools installed what cmds do i then use to recognise my rt73 wlan to enable it to connect to my network. I know it's a lot to consider but without an icon to click that allows me to choose my network like other linux distros i've used, i think all the points i've made is necessary for me to understand how to get a connection. Thanks for your time Brian

I don't know anything about nixos so I can't tell you how to download packages or what given packages are called. I have a realtek wifi dongle also. To get it to work I had to install the firmware-realtek package. Once I did that my system recognised the rt dongle.
