hi, just got me comp work again..
but I got a problem, my Windows won't start, so I think I need to reinstall it...
Linux starts and works great, (just that, that I have forgotten me root pass, simpel fix)
The problem is that I can't find the XP box.. so I can't get the cdkey.. So now I wonder, I know this don't fit in on LinuxQuestions.org but I have to ask, if there is anyway to cheek what your Windows XP serial is from Linux (I am dualbooting, VidaLinux and WinXP)..
As I understand it, the XP key is in the registry. Alternatively, contact MS to see how you would go bout getting around this. BTW, when you reinstall Windows, it will overwrite your mbr, so you'll need to reinstall grub or lilo.
And this is moved to General, as it's a Windows question.
hmm, yeah..
but there comes the problem, maybe a reinstall, but I had SP2 and I don't have any sp2cd..
hmm, but hey, can you start windows in fale safe using grub?
the problem I got is, that the screen goes blank after the Windows XP loads screen..
that might fix so I can get in to the system..

I would think that would be a pretty useless task..
Start the XP box in save mode and use keyviewer.exe (free on web)

However "IF" you do have a legitimate licence but simply cant find it,,
then just reinstall with a **cough** replacement key **COUGH**
I have built ALL of my machines from scratch so I don't have a key on the side or top of my case. This isn't always the way it is.
I might also add that most venders put one key on the case, but windows actually uses another key that is completely different (Dell used to do this and State agencies do this as well)
My keys are on a seperate piece of paper for instance.
Edit:
Oh, and I still use DOS, Windows 95 - along with Linux and Windows XP/2003

Sorry Micah, I guess Im just too used to dealing with proprietory boxes to think about self builds
