Firefox 3 Download Day 2008 | Set a Guinness World Record | Post

From http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/

Set a Guinness World Record Enjoy a Better Web

Quote:
Sounds like a good deal, right? All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours - it’s that easy. We're not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.

By the way, the official date for the launch of Firefox 3 will be posted here soon - so check back! Join our community and this effort by pledging today.

May I ask why a record for that is important? I mean, I don't want to sound like a jerk, but this reminded me the South Park Episode "More Crap".

While I do use Firefox for development a lot, it is not really my choice of browser for surfing the web. I am just curious about what good this "World Record" would do to Firefox... if any.

Who cares about the Guinness records? I would rather just have a tall Guinness.. Well, preferably a NewCastle Ale. Guinness is too flat for my taste.

I thought of a new record, the number of hits it takes to rip a dog's head off by hitting it with a baseball bat. I think I'll be the first record holder.

Nah, I'm pretty sure it's been done...
Here's one that might though, get a hardcore linux geek to willingly leave al technology alone forever...

What pitiful comments, I like to see how you many reacted if Firefox went non-OSS and payware. For once, they have done something wonderful in OSS, think what you want but Firefox is the pinnacle and shinning example of OSS driven innovation to overthrow corporate monopoly, so instead of appreciating the effort and commending it, all you can pass is just negative judgements. So what if they want (free)publicity, haven't you got it for free? Not to mention the scale of improvements that have gone into version 3 from 2. Someone needs to look inside themselves and start respecting the things they take for granted and get for free(in all ways).

I for one, am totally 100% behind Firefox. Pledged!

I think publicity is good and Firefox deserves it just as everybody else. I just thought the record itself is stupid. See, records like "most stable", "most feature rich", those are good things. Most downloaded is just stupid. Windows XP is probably the most downloaded (illegally, but still).

Now, if Firefox one day costs money, I don't particularly care. And I would not consider Firefox quite "innovative"(anymore) either. I've been testing betas of FF3 for a while here and it looks far too similar to 2 and 2 looked far too similar to 1.5. If you look the changes that went from IE6 to IE7, now that was a huge leap. Firefox 3, so far, has new buttons, a few new features, same dated interface.

So far, several sites I use which depends heavily on javascript are broken in FF3RC1 too. It manages memory better than FF2 did, but this is not innovation for me. This is a BUG FIX. Some features are nice, like the way it handles tags and bookmarks. I will give credit where credit is due.

Mozilla, in my opinion, is suffering from Microsoft syndrome of _not_ innovating much. If it was not for the great plugins that the COMMUNITY made, I'd stay clear of this overrated browser anyway...

The difference in release dates might explain the huge change in internet explorer:

IE6: August 2001
IE7: July 2007

Firefox on the other hand:

FX 0.1: September 2002
FX 3.0rc1: May 2008

So for Internet Explorer to change from version 6 to 7 took 6 years, during which time Firefox was created.

If you use the IE6 to IE7 change as a timescale for looking at features, a more valid comparison of the feature changes in Firefox might then be to look at the changes from version 0.1 to 3.0rc1.
