well you shoulda tryed the live cd first to test it out IMO BUT if you are looking for a rpm based distro try pclinuxos and sorry to hear your troubles :P

I think slackwares tgz is the easiest.

su
installpkg filename.tgz
done

I don't think it's a question of easy, it's a matter if what works for you

with ubutntu I simply copy pasted from browser to terminal so I didn't type a thing

but with debian based os's (ubuntu, mepeis, debian itself) it's kinda the same as slack:

su
dkpg -i package.deb
done

with a red hat it's similar:

su
rpm -i package.rpm
done
