Converting DAT files to MPEG

Hi,
I'd like to know if it's possible to convert DAT files obtained from VHS tapes and one inch mags, into another media format, like MPEG-4 or similar, or if some app is available which can do this? Please advise.

a DAT file could be a whole bunch of different things... is this VCD data??? you can easily convert most media types to divx using mplayer among other tools.

Well, what I have is mostly surveillance videos on VHS tapes and 1" mag disks, not VCD's or database files. Of course, VCD video too, comes in DAT's, so yeah, I was asking for converting such video to mpeg. Thanks for the tip on MPlayer. I assume it supports MPEG-4 encoding. Is is possible to encode using MPlayer from the command line?

How to convert a video CD dat file to MPEG:

mv videofile.dat videofile.mpg

Now for the surveillance DVR file, it depends on the make/model, etc.
