Yup! The lens I'm currently coveting is just under $2K at the moment!
Yeah, these lenses will cost more than what you spend on the camera body alone. And they're worth it because you get much faster shutter speeds to use for fast action/sports scenes. And great for low light scenes and etc. They're good to have if you have the budget for them.
Was shooting bike racing with a stupidly expensive Canon 400mm F/2.8L last week ($10K, but this was borrowed from Canon for the day).
That lens would be worth it if you make a living doing professional photography as a freelancer or you have a photography business where you need a lens like that.
But as a photography hobbyist, like myself, I would buy it if I win the lottery. Until then, too rich for my blood.

My photography is just a hobby too, and for my normal subject matter it's a lens that I'd never use, but as it was a Canon CPS workshop and they were lending out gear it would have been criminal not to have had a go! I did turn down the chance to use a 1DX Mk II body for the day.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is an awesome camera. I wouldn't mind owning one.
Just because it's beyond my budget doesn't stop me ...
Fortunately my wife is very understanding - she encouraged my most recent purchase, Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 (she didn't have to work very hard).
The rest of my collection is a Nikon D610, 70-300 F/4-F/5.6 and a Panasonic TZ70 (because it (just) fits in my pocket). And the only film camera I've kept (because it was my first "real" camera), a Zorki 4 with a 50mm F/2.0 Jupiter lens.
Distribution: Mainly Devuan, antiX, & Void, with Tiny Core, Fatdog, & BSD thrown in.

I used to have all that stuff too, & a darkroom - but I don't miss any of it any more since going digital - in fact I gave all my film SLRs & lenses to our local college for their students to use.
