Smartphone cameras are excellent at taking snapshots. Really.

But if you want to take serious pictures you do want to have lenses with decent aperture, and either a zoom lens or removable lenses. Tripod mounting. You want to be able to set diaphragm and shutter time, set one and have the other one automatically. You want to have an indication which part of the scene is in focus. And I personally prefer taking my pictures in RAW.

I am not sure about DSLR with integrated zoom lenses versus real DSLR with interchangable lenses. Changing lenses has a dust risk. Usually good lenses outlive the camera body so you'd buy a new body and keep your lenses. But with my Canon 300D the lenses died at the same time as the body. (Not entirely true, I had the 300D shutter repaired once. But not worth it. Repair price is half of the price of a new body.)

Digital darkrooms really have made photography more sociable.
