Agreed. The problem is evil greedy monopolistic corporations.
I use a lot of open source software because well it is free and you can modify it if you want/need
but I need to use proprietary software for various reasons too
I think that the "greed" excuse is over-used. More often, I think it is incompetence[not necessarily in the technological aspect of the product- but in the administration/structure of these large corps]; and just a general lack of integrity/morality of all involved. The actions of these corps lead to their own downfall and create hard feelings among consumers, which are antithetical to the success that greed requires. And where does one draw the line between earning a profit [the sole reason for a corp's existence]/growing, and greed?

When profit motive trumps that of serving a company.
And arguably the purpose of companies/businesses/corporations is to provide a needed product/service and making a profit is a byproduct.
That's how I learned it. For some reason lots of people seem to think that profit is the primary purpose and providing for the customer is a byproduct

That's a nice ideal, but it's not practical. Sounds like something that might be taught by an academic in an ivory tower, who never had to survive in the real world. Think about it: People invest money in a corporation, to earn a return on that money. That return can only exist if a profit is made [or, in today's world...if taxpayer funded subsidies are given... ].
On a more personal level: Let's say you're a plumber, and your goal is to maintain people's plumbing in good working order. If you had to do the labor for free and pay for some of the parts out of your own pocket, because you didn't charge enough to cover your labor; overhead; and parts/supplies, you wouldn't be a plumber for very long. [For simplicity's sake, we won't deal with plumber's crack in this example ]

I don't think anyone suggested that.
If one's only major source of income is plumbing, then the plumber would charge the cost of parts + a fair labor charge to survive.
In profit motive the plumber may charge over real cost for parts and excessive amounts for labor (common)
In any case, part cost should always be covered by the customer because otherwise it would be a direct loss for the provider.
Being completely honest I don't get what is so bad about Windows. I use it about every day and it is pretty stable and, to be really honest, often it works better as a full desktop than Linux. I do really like Linux, don't get me wrong on this one.
Depends on what your doing with it, and if you never try anything else you won't know there are better tools.
For example a $99 Craftsman 1/4" router is fine for making birdhouses but when I started making all new cabinets for my kitchen I moved up to a $300 Porter Cable 1/2". The higher end wood working tool was just easier to use and more accurate and faster then the home/hobby quality one.
Other issues I ran into, Windows doesn't use memory like I wanted it too. Windows decided that ram should be kept free so it can load new things faster so it spends a lot time swapping. I'll test things out under a virtual instance and that memory management will try to swap out what I'm trying to use.
I would back up my laptop every day by plugging in a USB drive then running a robocopy script to copy m files over. After about a month it would stop assigning a drive letter unless I refreshed hardware. After another month it would just stop assigning a drive letter unless I went in and removed the hardware and re-added it. Linux works every time and a can setup a hotplug script to start my backups without manually having to run something.
The other and biggest issue was security. IF I don't need/want IE, OE, .net, etc why can't I remove those. I can't remove the parts I don't need/want and have to spend time patching those. Then I had to run antivirus and keep it up to date, I had to run anti-malware and keep it up to date, etc. And of course all the patch/reboot cycles. The the limitations such as the 2G .pst size in Outlook so I had to archive my data monthly and then remember and track what month I did something so I could go open the archived pst and find it.
It got to where windows maintenance took a good chunk of time. It takes far less time and effort maintaining a Linux system which gave back time to do other things.

corporations can do whatever they want. its probably not greed but i think the main purpose of most corporations is to keep shareholders happy (customers come 2nd) and their work force come 3rd.
thats why there is a prevalence of cheap off-shore workers and build materials from conflict zones.
(this is far beyond just open-source vs. proprietary).
If money and power are involve but we find a better way (e.g: automotive, electric, slavery\torture industries) it's hard to kill the old one! Money like ideas has no brains so to speak thought isn’t smart. Do you go to work ta work or get a pay check and which do the supreme overlords want us there for, should be both right... not if you go for power and control (or were born into it,) the new world order needs to cut the fat; give\take all of their unneeded profits (rolexes\etc) to education and then I will support them? The only true killers of competition should be us! Two stinking OSs that's like believing there should only be one god,,, geniuses...
ahhhhhh, man this thread is tooooo long, not to be rude but no one will read over one-hundred thirty-seven pages on a forum. wHY NOT JUST make a windows vs Linux 3 for peat sake as this thread is from 2009! most linux forums would have locked or removed such a long thread, god most forums expect the reader to at least read 3-5 pages, but god. I used vista and it sucked but not as bad as 8 or as bloated as Ubuntu 14.04 and mint 17 (god those distros have goten bloated). I use linux becuase I like it and I have broken many distros and hardware (out of rage). Microsoft does not just make Windows they have two other OS's they are working on so they can someday replace windows for a new product. Has anyone even mentioned OS/2's baby the ecomestation!
I am making this new thread because the old "becuase shiny things are funs new windows vs linux" thread is ricululy large and out of date. Also it s not just linux vs windows, but any other os that is alive and by that I mean it still has a user base and recigves new updates or releases. For example linux vs ecomestation and linux vs osx. Ok you get the idea!
I have tried Windows, 95, 98, me, 2000, xp, longhorn, vista, 7, 8, windows fundamentals for legacy pc's, windows thin pc, and react os. I have tried beos and haiku, I how ever have not used amiga os 4 or morphos, I have used aros and aeros.
I thing that the 9x's were unstable piles of horse crap and I did not mind vista and think that most people have NO RIGHT to COMPLAIN about it as most of them do not know of all the crap that was happinging with the project being restarted and the reasources for vista cut into forths witch is why vista is so unstable and 7 feels, half baked if you used vista. 8 is trash and a pain in th butt to remove. The only thing that Windows had was it's look and now we have that. The only thing I like about windows was it's themes and the layout of the menu and icons, that was it and hence why I use xfce's whisker menu, witch would beat windows if it was bloody themeable. once the steambox comes out windows will go by by.

It doesn't matter how many linux vs windows threads are created. Linux will always come on top here because this is a linux dedicated forum. The same could be said for windows and mac as well if you go to a dedicated forum for them.
Personally, I don't need a linux vs windows thread to convince me to use linux. I know the pros and cons of each and frankly for me, linux outweighs windows by a landslide.

I once read a thread that was over 150 pages when I first came to it [Read it over a period of time, of course]. What's the harm in leaving it up/open for those who might be interested? The "most people who won't read it" don't have to; but having the option is nice. Plus, some of us have been following this thread for years [I think this was the very first thread I read on Linuxquestions, when I first came here.]
Us old farts have pretty heavy-duty attention spans!
