ATI compared to Nvidia RATING SYSTEMS confusion!

I need a new video card and am currently running an ATI Radeon X300.

I want to replace it with an Nvidia 8500 GTS but am curious, what is the equivalent ATI chipset and if i have an ATI Card can i switch it out for an Nvidia, i dont get the AGP / SLI thing at all. If it helps i have a Dell Dimension E510 purchased in August 2006.

SLI means you are running 2 or more nvidia graphics cards - ati equivalent is crossfire.
AGP is where you used to plugin your graphics cars.Used to because all the later model PC's use pci-e.
First of all you need to know wether you got an AGP or pci-e slot for graphics.
