install Fedora Core 2

Hi,

I am trying to install Fedora Core 2, failed 5 times.

1. The CDs failed at test.
2. I saw error msg like:
No cpio magic ...
...
error 2 reading header
cpio: bad magic
3. When ignored the msgs and go ahead to install it, failed on installing
"glibc-common-2.3.3-27"

I tried 5 sets of CDs, two from different downloads,
2 from the book of "A Practical Guide to Red Hat Linux"
and one from the book's editor, who claimed the CDs are good.

My computer has two hard drives, one with 60GB, one is 6.4GB.
I partitioned the big one with 18GB for installing the
Fedora Core 2. I tried to install it on this partition, or on the
separate hard drive or on both, still failed. I even changed my
CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM, still see the same msgs and the same
failures.

My PC runs Windows 2000 sever. I tried to install Fedora core 2
as a dual-boot system.

What's the problem?

Either bad media (not properly burned) or ram problems..
It is possible to have a series of cd problems with low quality cds and high recording speeds..

Has this pc had any previous problems, strange file damage, reboots etc
(apart from the usual M$ quirks)

One thing I don't understand is that why all the 5 set of CDs are bad. One set was from the author, his editor said it was Okay.

The pc reboot with no reasons for several times before, but not for after I installed Windows 2000 Server. The Ram is 184MB (192MB with 8 MB shared as video memory), processor is P3-450Mhz.

It sure is mighty strange..

A good test would be to burn a really small distribution (~64MB) and see if that works..
Or run a cd cleaner through the drive..

Try www.damnsmalllinux.org or even http://movix.sourceforge.net

I know this thread was from a while ago, however its a follow up to it

I'm having the same issues installing Fedora Core 3 and Fedora Core 4

However, the random reboot problems that you had were most likely faulty RAM problems. If you have more then one stick try using one at a time, and the ntry a memory test. I had that same problem with a 512 stick of APACER ram I have

Also, it may be an unstable PSU.

However, does anyone else have any solutions to the bad magic error 2 problem that both me and the thread starter are having?

Oh and please I just joined the forums just so I can reply to this topic, I'll search after I post this so please don't newb me
