I made a fresh install of Fedora Core 2 and I mounted a ext3 filesystem that I initially created under Redhat 9. This filesystem serves as a samba file share as well.

Looking at filenames having special characters like ä, ö, ü, etc. created on the RH9 environment, the gnome browser reports the filename with placeholders on special characters and (invalid unicode) behind the filename.

On a Win32 platform connecting to the samba share, the filenames also are displayed the same as on the Gnome browser.

Any hints?

Sorry - wrong information provided before: Booted RH9 again and as expected, special chars are displayed correctly on my Win32 machine, connected through samba. - However, RH9 as well displays the invalid unicode message.

RH9 runs Samba Rel 2.x; Fedora Core Samba Rel 3.x - Just checked the release notes of Samba 3.0.0 and saw that they worked on unicode. It seems that my issue is caused through this. - So I will make a backup from my Win32 machine with RH9 running, rename the directory on the RH9 server and restore to the same disk with FC2. That should correctly translate the filenames.
